Wallis and other Christian activists persist in this mistaken reading of Mt 25:40, conveniently leaving out the phrase "my brothers." The overwhelming historical consensus is that Jesus was referring to his followers, the only people in Matthew he calls his "brothers." (see Mt 10 for comparison, esp vv40-42.) This reading is consistent with the consistent biblical theology of God's presence being with his people- not the poor.

This is not to minimize the biblical injunction to care for the poor, but only exposes Wallis' stubborn misreading and application in service of his political convictions.
