A ceasefire can stop the bombs, but not the moral reckoning. Will this be the start of true and just peace, or another pause before the next round of suffering?
My thought is that unfortunately Donald Trump's only goal was to obtain a cease fire and cease of the war between Israel and Hamas as soon as he could to try to obtain the Nobel Prize for Peace, which was ludicrous to say the least. Now that the cease fire is "obtained" and the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Maria Corina Machado, Donald Trump has no more interest in working with anyone towards rebuilding Gaza or Israel - he is back on to other ways of destroying the rights and needs of the people in America.
Thanks, Jim for your thoughtful, cogent, and honest reflection. Your insights and recommended readings bring a glimmer of light and hope to this awful situation.
Are there elements that led to peace in Northern Ireland that could be used in the Middle East? Defeating the hatred felt by both sides, as well as justice, will need to come first.
Thank you for your reflections and prayer. I would gladly give Trump the Nobel Peace Prize for brokering a lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians. If Obama was given the Nobel Peace Prize for not being G. Dubs Bush and having good intentions. Then why not Trump for greater peace in the Middle East.
Doing theology while enduring genocide has been the entire story of human history. It is essentially all our world has experienced and talked about since WWII. Thanks be to God, that so far we still have voices and lives lived with inextinguishable hope, love and compassion that come alongside, coexist with, and speak out against our human cruelty and insanity. Greed, ignorance and hatred will exist as long as human beings exist until we evolve into the grace to vow, and the ability to keep the vow. . .I WILL NOT HAVE AN ENEMY, AND I WILL NOT BE AN ENEMY. Lord, haste the day when that faith shall be sight for all of us.
Another book to read is Colum McCann’s Apeirogon, a hybrid novel about two men, a Palestinian and an Israeli, who have lost children to the conflict and who come together to share their stories and their grief to the Parents Circle.
