What I told Joe Scarborough about the 'faith factor' in the 2024 elections
Our reflective discussion, and I would say discernment, around the "Morning Joe" table was about what we are facing now AND what we can do about it.
In the beginning, according to Genesis 1:26, God said, “Let us create humankind in our own image and after our own likeness.” This is the divine creation of all of us as equal in God’s love and dignity – the foundation for all earthly talk of human rights and voting rights.
In the beginning of the United States, Indigenous people were eradicated to steal their land, Africans were kidnapped into brutal slavery for the free labor to build a new economy and a new slave-holding Republic. America’s Original Sin has evolved and has now reached a crescendo in which White Christian Nationalism is fighting for its life, by any means necessary.
On April 2, the opening day launch of my new book, The False White Gospel: Rejecting Christian Nationalism, Reclaiming True Faith, and Refounding Democracy, the “Morning Joe” show on MSNBC hosted a long segment on the faith factor in this 2024 election campaign and how it could be decisive. I wanted to share that with you:
I was blessed to have Dr. Eddie Glaude, my friend and the author of my book’s forward, alongside me at the table. He said Christianity was very complicated in America, and referred to a section in my book that cites Frederick Douglass about the terrible moral contradiction when the church-going bell and the slave auctioneer’s bell “chime in with each other, and the bitter cries of the heart-broken slave are drowned in the religious shouts of his pious master.”
Our reflective discussion, and I would say discernment, around the Morning Joe table was about what we are facing now AND what we can do about it.
I invite you to listen and to act.

I received your new book, 4 days ago, which I preordered 2 months ago - hurray. Dr. Gaulde’s introduction is excellent setting up your teaching. Thank you. I pray contemporary Gospel readers will rediscover Jesus and discard their self-centered needs and fear.
Please bring your book tour to Arizona!
