The book I had to write for this time
A conversation with my friend Diana Butler Bass about why I felt compelled to write my upcoming book
Watching the news and discerning the times is a daily discipline that has become more and more alarming in the run up to the election of 2024. I felt called to respond to this urgent moment with a new book now available for preorder: The False White Gospel, Rejecting Christian Nationalism, Reclaiming Faith, and Refounding Democracy. It comes out at Easter time, right in the middle of the presidential campaign. This is likely the most timely book I have ever written.
Publishers Weekly called it “an ardent manifesto” that “promises to be a conversation starter in church groups and beyond.” I hope and pray so.
In my first public conversation about the book I was blessed to join a podcast hosted by Diana Butler Bass, my longtime friend. She really gets the book and had some reflections that I found helpful and encouraging. The book’s refreshing and reframing of iconic biblical texts was crucial for her and she called for pastors to do a preaching series from those Scriptures for this critical year.
Diana and her team made a 13-minute video summary of our conversation. I hope The False White Gospel will be a useful tool for you as we all try to raise our voices, our lives, and our faithfulness to shape the “faith factor” in this election season and beyond. Because the answer to the bad religion of Christian nationalism, is not no religion, but the true faith of Jesus Christ.
Please take a look at my conversation with Diana.
My new book, “False White Gospel: Rejecting Christian Nationalism, Reclaiming True Faith, and Refounding Democracy,” is available for preorder. Please consider ordering a copy.
A terrific discussion between you and Diana Butler Bass. Worth every minute of watching and considering.
It was a pleasure to host you, Jim, at The Cottage. I hope the book starts many great conversations on faith and politics, especially on the six Bible stories you present anew.
Thank you for the many ways you've inspired me over the years.
