Returning with a new book announcement

The answer to bad religion is true faith, and that's what my new book tries to lift up during this dangerous time.

I love writing weekly columns for Substack, but I had to take a respite while writing a new book, which is now finished! It will be released just after Easter 2024, and will call for a resurrection in both our faith and our politics. 

Its title gets to the heart of our problem in the churches and the nation: The False White Gospel. And the subtitle clearly explains the purpose of this book: Rejecting Christian Nationalism, Reclaiming True Faith, and Refounding Democracy.

I believe the answer to bad religion is true faith, and that's what this book tries to lift up at a very dangerous time. The book outlines in depth the three enormous tests we now face: of democracy, of faith, and whether a new generation will embrace faith communities going forward. 

It is also a hopeful book, and dives deep into key ancient biblical texts, including gospel teachings of Jesus, that could guide us to move beyond fear, hate, lies, and violence to a powerful common good, a genuine multi-racial democracy, and the "beloved community" our best prophets have dreamed of. This is also a book to help spark national conversations in many communities which I hope many of you will join or even help lead.

Upcoming columns will delve into how to prepare for the moral and faithful conversations we need to have. This isn't just about politics, and certainly more than partisan politics, but I hope and pray that this book goes deeper to offer a theology of democracy and a spirituality of civic engagement. It is time to lift up our better angels to defeat our worst demons in America's battle for the soul of the nation.
