The ongoing mass deportation crisis continues to grow more brutal by the day. What we are witnessing is not only a humanitarian catastrophe—it is a moral failure that runs utterly contrary to the teachings of Jesus, who calls us to welcome the stranger and protect the vulnerable.
As is so often the case with authoritarian movements, immigrants are among the first and most continually targeted groups. Their often fragile legal status, lack of citizenship, and identity as perceived “outsiders”—because of race, ethnicity, religion, language, or culture—make them especially vulnerable. We’re seeing that pattern play out again here in the United States, as the rights and safety of millions living within our borders are being tested and systematically undermined.
