Welcome to God’s Politics, a newsletter and community where we’ll explore what it means to put our faith into action. We’ll work to repair racial injustice, alleviate poverty, fight for our marginalized brothers and sisters, revive our communities, both religious and secular, protect our democracy and offer a more substantive discussion on the intersection of religion and politics.

I’m Jim Wallis, and I’ve been thinking, talking, writing, praying and acting on these issues for nearly 50 years, first as a founder and leader of Sojourners, the Christian social justice advocacy organization and publication, and now at Georgetown University, where I hold the inaugural Chair in Faith and Justice and lead the new Center on Faith and Justice.

I am a Christian whose commitment to public life is grounded in Matthew 25, where Jesus calls upon all of us to care for the “least of our brothers and sisters.” But I hope this newsletter will be inclusive enough to welcome people of all faiths, and those without a spiritual home.

I was raised in a Midwestern evangelical family, where as a teenager I questioned the racial segregation in my church and community, which led me to the Black churches and neighborhoods of inner-city Detroit. I spent my student years involved in the civil rights and antiwar movements at Michigan State University.

Me in the 1970s. The hair and the beard have changed, thanks be to God. The message has not.

Some of you may recognize the title of this newsletter, God’s Politics, which comes from a book I wrote in 2005 with the subtitle “Why the Right Gets it Wrong and the Left Doesn’t Get It,” which is still true. I’ve written many other books, including America’s Original Sin: Racism, White Privilege, and the Bridge to America; The Call to Conversion; and Christ in Crisis: Reclaiming Jesus In A Time of Fear, Hate, and Violence. I also host a popular podcast called The Soul of the Nation.

Political life in America is enormously complex, but the guiding spirit of this newsletter will be relatively simple: Don’t go Left, Don’t go Right, Go Deeper.

In this newsletter, you won’t get news summaries or links to the day’s buzziest stories. What you will find is a weekly perspectivewith commentary that offers what I hope will reveal the profound moral and ethical questions beneath the issues of the day, including stories not covered by the media. We’ll discuss how to understand the news from a faith vantage point, and perhaps even more importantly, what to do about it.

Sometimes I’ll post columns like those I wrote at Sojourners for decades. But I will also include personal reflections, videos, spiritual and political resources, book recommendations and authors to share, and sometimes even art and music from friends and supporters. You will also get timely links to my Soul of the Nation podcast. And of course, we’ll always be open to your suggestions.

You can subscribe by entering your email address below. There is no charge for subscriptions. Our initial plan is to post once a week, though at times we may do so more often. You can also find me on Twitter and Facebook.

Thanks in advance for joining us as we explore what it means to put faith into action in times that really need that, with a community to also help spiritually sustain you. Now, let’s go deeper.
